Objective
The Solar network joins twelve leading European research groups specialized in computational, theoretical and observational solar physics and an industrial partner (an SME) that develops state-of-the-art 3D computer codes and high level 3D visualization tools. We aim to provide a multi-disciplinary, flexible framework to train a new generation of solar physicists. We will tackle some of the fundamental unsolved problems in solar physics, preparing the young scientists to exploit the unprecedented computational and observational capabilities (ground-based telescopes and satellite missions) available to the solar scientists at present and in the near future. Key areas included in our proposal are: emergence of magnetic flux through the solar surface into the solar atmosphere and interplanetary space; connectivity and interaction of the atmospheric layers and reconstruction of the coronal field; magnetic reconnection; solar flares; solar eruptions that violently affect the interplanetary medium. Our approach is multi-disciplinary and firmly based on the careful combination of computer experiments, observations from the ground and space, and analytical models. The network partners have been directly involved in the development of advanced computational tools (3D computer codes, visualization packages), observational facilities and in the planning of space missions.
Therefore, they are optimally situated to pass their expertise on to a new generation of astronomers. We propose an ambitious network-based training, with joint supervision of ESRs through two network experts in different disciplines. Of particular interest is the interaction we foresee between the industrial and academic partners of the project. The network activities include 5 post-graduate schools, network meetings, coordination of postgraduate courses in the nodes and exchange of information through the web. A detailed program for the acquisition of complementary skills will also be implemented..
