Network of European Funding for Neuroscience Research

Objective

Brain disorders are major causes for impaired quality of life, and more than one billion people worldwide suffer from them. Accordingly, substantial funds support this research area in the 10 EU member states and associated countries participating in NEURON. There is, however, a lack of programme coordination that prevents synergistic effects and optimal utilisation of available resources. The proposed CA "Network of EUROpean funding for Neuroscience research" NEURON is based on the activities of the SSA NEURON. It aims at linking 11 European national research funding programmes and funding activities in the field of disease-related neurosciences. NEURON will start in the area of neurodegenerative conditions, which are among the most pressing problems in an ageing population, and extend into more divers areas in the field of brain diseases. The consortium shall overcome fragmentation and create an ERA-Net for joint activities and a platform for the integration of research policies and research programmes. Partners shall share information on existing national programmes and best management practices. This will induce a mutual learning process and will eventually lead to improved standards in research policy and funding activities. National programmes or topic-specific parts of programmes shall be coordinated and opened. Some concrete measures to reach the goals of NEURON shall be: workshops to exchange information on the topics specified in the work programme, exchange of programme managers, development of standards in specific areas of programme management, agreements on joint programme management procedures, preparation and implementation of joint calls for fellowship proposals, preparation and implementation of joint calls for project proposals. The topic for the first joint calls for project proposals shall be jointly selected from the specific areas "neurodegenerative conditions" or "innovative technologies in neuroscience".

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
