Networking the Sky for Aeronautical Communications

Objective

Within its strategic research agenda, ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research in Europe) indicates that powerful communication is a key enabling factor for the future Air-Traffic Management (ATM) development in Europe required to support the expected sustainable growth of European air transport. However, already today bottlenecks in Air-Traffic Control (ATC) and ATM communication exist. Moreover, the expected ATM paradigm shift towards more strategic and tactical planning requires additional communication capabilities which are not yet available in current ATC/ATM communication systems.

Currently, several European research initiatives with the goal to develop improved communication technologies for aeronautical communication are conducted. These initiatives comprise ground-based, satellite-based, aircraft-to-aircraft and airport communication for all different application classes, like ATC/ATM communication, airline operational and administrative communication.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
