European clinical research infrastructures Network - Transnational working groups

Objective

Based on the interconnection of national networks of academic clinical research infrastructures, the European Clinical Research Infrastructures Network (ECRIN) is designed to bridge the fragmented organisation of European clinical research and to develop an integrated EU-wide clinical research infrastructure.
The consortium covers the whole spectrum of diseases, acting as a non-specialised network of competence centres that reach critical mass in each country. ECRIN currently includes nine European states, a third country (Canada) and plans to extend to other EU countries (WP7). A first project (ECRIN-RKP, 2004-5, SSA511963) helped identify the main bottlenecks to multinational studies. The present project (ECRIN TWG) represents the second step of ECRIN development: 7 transnational working groups will define guidelines and procedures allowing to support academic and industry sponsors in multinational studies. These working groups will focus on : WP1 interaction with ethics committees WP2 regulation and interaction with competent authorities WP3 adverse event reporting WP4 data management WP5 study monitoring WP6 standard operating procedures WP8 education This work will allow ECRIN to define and spread harmonised tools and practice, and to prepare the third step of its development consisting of acting as an integrated clinical research infrastructure providing support to investigators and sponsors in multinational studies through a set of services based on the know-how derived from the working groups.
The European correspondents and the coordination team trained during this project will later implement these integrated services. This project therefore prepares the development of a EU infrastructure and contributes to the Innovative Medicines Initiative, facilitating clinical trials in the EU.
