Objective
We have previously created a network for colleagues working on the genetics of primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) and their treatment within the EU. This project is one of the finalists for the Descartes Prize in 2005. We extended this work to encompass the NAS countries in 2001, again within an EU-funded framework. This has led to a marked increase in quality of the care for this patient category in Europe.
It has also led to a scientific advantage for Europe in understanding the background of these diseases and potential cures. China represents a vast untapped resource for patient samples and ideas for future therapy. Professor Hammarström, a professor at Karolinska Institutet, the coordinator of this application, works part-time as a guest professor in the medical school of Peking University (also referred to as Peking University Health Science Center). Karolinska Institutet recently opened an official liaison office on the campus of the medical school of Peking University.
