Objective
The main objective of the BREAKWAVE Project is to demonstrate the viability of the breakwater integrated OWC (Oscillating Water Column) technology. The demonstration will be implemented in a vertical-wall breakwater at the mouth of river Douro (Porto, Portugal). The plant will consist of two large chambers with 1 MW of installed capacity. The dissemination and feasibility studies will consider other kinds of breakwaters. Building up on the previous OWC coastal experiences namely at the Pico plant in Azores Island and Limpet in Islay Island (Scotland) the team engaged in this project is working on this near-shore breakwater integrated OWC technology mainly because of the significant cost reductions - with an obvious impact in the economics - this solution envisages. Since the consortium strongly believes in the proposed solution, it has been already started working.
