Mapping the strong potential

Objetivo

I will extract information on the form of the strong nuclear potential through a procedure I will develop for analysing data from the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). I will carry out this work at Lund University in collaboration with Professor Paula Eerola, an internationally recognized authority on the subject. The nature of the strong force, including the form of the strong potential, determines to a large extent what bound particle states can exist in our universe and serve as building blocks for larger systems. I will measure the masses of several particles known as Bc* which have been predicted theoretically to be bound by the strong potential but not yet observed, and I will compare them with predictions derived from various potentials. This analysis requires use of data from the ATLAS Pixel Detector, the development of which I have worked on for the past 10 years in the context of the international ATLAS Collaboration.
