The microeconomics of growth across regions in Europe

Objective

This project is going to enrich the empirics of regional convergence across Europe (Corrado et al 2005; Canova, 2004) which has mainly focussed on country or regional (NUTS2) aggregate growth performance. A new dataset at a smaller geographical scale (NUTS3) for 1031 European regions has been released in September 2005. This is a key element to test for the determinants of growth at the micro-level (Burgess and Venables, 2004) and to examine two of the most important aspects of growth performance which is of particular relevance for the European Commission at this time: the uneven performance of the different NUTS3 regions within each country and the nature of sub-regional spatial externalities and spill-overs. The innovative part of the project is that we will account for aggregation effects using a hierarchical modelling approach.
