Quantum Dots incorported into Nanowires

Objectif

The electronics industry currently fabricates components and devices using a top-down approach. This, however, has limitations and researchers are looking for new strategies for developing smaller and more efficient components.

The field of nanotechnology provides us with a promising approach, which is often referred to as "bottom-up" technology. The aim of this particular study is to develop this approach in order to develop nanoscale electronic components.

More specifically, we seek to investigate experimental methods for the fabrication and characterisation of nanowires incorporating semiconductor quantum dots. Such hybrid systems are of practical interest for the fabrication of the next generation of optical based devices such as; quantum dot light emitters; spintronics; photodetectors; and solar energy conversion cells.

The latter is very significant since it is now common knowledge that we are rapidly approach an energy crisis and we now have to look for methods of developing more efficient renewable sources of energy.

This interdisciplinary study has six main objectives in order to meet the aim of the project:
- The fabrication of ligand coated quantum dots suitable for incorporation into nanowires.
- Template deposition of metal and semiconductor nanowires using polycarbonate and anopore membranes of varying dimensions.
- The incorporation of the synthesized quantum dots into the nanowires.
- The extraction and cleaning of the nanowires containing quantum dots.
- The assembly of the nanowires onto surfaces
- The optical and electrical characterisation of the nanowires.
