Evolution and fairness in the theory of monetary integration

Objective

My research project aims to elaborate a theory of monetary integration as an evolutionary process in which countries care about fairness and reciprocity.

Recent studies have shown that the optimum currency area (OCA) theory
- fails to explain countries decisions regarding their participation to the European Monetary Union (EMU), and
- has little or no predictive or explanatory capacity.

This calls for the need of an approach bringing new lights on the decisions processes and taking into account the strategic behaviours of countries operating in a complex environment of trade and globalization.

I would like to propose an evolutionary approach in which monetary union, as a common economic institution, emerges from the interaction of sovereign countries over time when consideration such like fairness and reciprocity matter.

A theory of how countries decide to integrate a monetary union may improve proposals to reform institutional structures, which in turn contributes to the success and the stability of the monetary union area.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
