Development of an astrophysics centre in Crete

Objective

Astrophysicists in Crete, among the most active in Greece, cover with their research nearly the entire electromagnetic spectrum - from infrared and optical, to UV, X-rays and -rays. What is needed then is Transfer of Knowledge in order to fully exploit the existing and new instrumentation of the telescope and utilize it in projects relevant to the current major problems in astrophysical research. In particular, to the scope of this project is to actively participate in multi-wavelength studies in Astrophysics (space-born and ground) since it is mainly through such studies that major breakthroughs are made. This will be accomplished by inviting more experienced researchers, who will assist the host institution to become expert in using efficiently the available instruments, in identifying modern astrophysical projects to be tackled with the available facilities, and in establishing long-term collaborations with leading European institutes.

With the existing infrastructure and developed local expertise, the aim of this project is to establish Crete as a centre of attraction for young European researchers, especially from countries with less developed astronomical infrastructure, lacking the background necessary to use other major research facilities. They will be thoroughly trained in modern astronomical observations, thus acquiring - in a cost effective manner - all practical knowledge to efficiently use larger European facilities in the future.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
