Objective
The cluster project titled " Network for Sustainable Energy Strategies" aims to boost the use of renewables and to raise awareness on the use, applications, and benefits of different renewable energy sources in several European countries. The global project is divided into four parts; firstly, the "Raya Wind Plan" consists on a wind viability study for the North of Cáceres Raya -Castelo Branco district. Secondly, the proposal "Potential Study and Actions to Increase the Market Penetration of Biomethanation Projects", aims to increase the implementation of Biogas projects in farms. Thirdly, "SOLARVISION Three Cities with the Sun" aims to boost market dissemination for solar thermal applications. Finally, "Network for New Sustainable Energy Strategies" consists on a proposal to show an ecologically and financially sound strategy to increase the use of renewable energies in the energy mix of different communities.
The "Raya Wind Plan" involves, on one hand, a study on the viability of wind energy use in the North of Cáceres - Center of Portugal Raya; on the other, a promotional plan for renewable energies, and particularly wind energy. The work is being coordinated from Extremadura (Spain)by BIOEX S.L.; CGV deals with the technical aspects of the study, and ADRACES with the Portuguese part of the project. A viability study of wind potential in the Raya, together with a study of the environmental compatibility of wind parks and the Nature 2000 sites in the area has been carried out. The IV ECOTOPY Workshop on Renewable Energies and Bioclimatism was held in Madrid as part of the promotional activities of the Plan. During this workshop, experts presented different perspectives on renewable energies, Bioclimatism, and their contribution to the sustainable development in the XXI Century. The main results to stem from the RE Plan will be the establishment of a framework to facilitate the installation of Wind Parks in the region in a socially, environmentally and economically viable manner.
The project "Potential Study and Actions to Increase the Market Penetration of Biomethanation Projects" consists on a quantitative and qualitative estimation of biogas projects and on an evaluation of the most suitable techniques. The team carrying out this project is compounded by Belgian (ERBE), and Spanish (BESEL) partners; a third partner L.E.E. sarl, from Luxembourg, is likely to participate in the near future. Data to characterize agricultural exploitations with the potential for the implementation of biomethanation projects, both in Belgium and in Spain, has been collected through a questionnaire, bibliographic search and contacts with the agricultural organisations and administrations. Several projects have been analysed in Belgium, Spain and Luxemburg. Information on the project has already been disseminated in many ways - through a Newsletter and web site of the partners, speeches and on other occasions, at a local, regional and national level. The main expected result of this work will be an increased development of biomethanation projects with the aim of producing energy in the regions involved.
The proposal "SOLARVISION Three Cities with the Sun" involves an analysis of the current market conditions for solar thermal applications, and a Campaign for information and awareness-raising with specific key-actors, together with "action-promotion" and assessment of multiplying solar projects. This project is being carried out simultaneously in three European cities: in Barcelona by the coordinator Barnamil, in Zaragoza by Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo, and in Stuttgart by KATE. The focus during the first year of the project has been on gathering and analysing information on local and national aspects of thermal solar energy and on listing funding possibilities for solar thermal applications. As part of the promotion and awareness campaign, the "Day of the Sun" was held at each of the three cities, promoting solar thermal energy amongst construction professionals and the general public. Dossiers and practical guides on solar thermal energy have also been distributed and participative workshops have been carried out.
"Network for New Sustainable Energy Strategies" involves several partners from different communities all over Europe (Redingen - Luxemburg, Tulln - Austria, Toro - Spain, Dormagen - Germany), which are building up a network in order to work out a strategy for establishing a 100% supply with renewable energies in the long term. This strategy will be developed by using the specific data on the actual energy mix and the financial as well as the legal background in the specific areas. As a result of this action investments of several million EUR by private companies and local authorities are expected in all communities as well as the creation of about 15 to 20 jobs altogether. As an ecological benefit there will be an estimated CO2-reduction of 250 000 t annually. The success of this action will even be larger through the set up of a communication network with regular meetings, seminars and internet communication.
