History and future of Europe seen through the lens of the figure of the barbarian

Objective

Recent debates refer to an old, presumably anachronistic figure: the barbarian. Whether it is the future role of Turkey in the European Union, Islamic terrorism or the debates around veils in French schools, the reference to the barbarians is present in all of these discourses.

The objective of the project BARBEUR is to situate the history and future of Europe in the context of the barbarian. It claims that this perspective will shed light on the constitution of western rationality, culture and civilization. This will be achieved by studying western concepts such as rationality through the lens of the figure of the barbarian.

The project rereads the main texts that contributed to European identity, looking for the hidden barbarian in these texts. This allows tracing back the foundations of the assumed universality of occidental values. Culture for example was for a long time a value that you either have or don't have.

The hypothesis of the project BARBEUR is that the barbarian depicts a key figure at the origin of the construction of universality. He does not represent a different culture but is commonly taken to be without culture. That is why he could serve as a negative counterpart, to enable European universal values.

The project helps to conceptualize how to move beyond the traditional universal principle and envision a future for Europe. The relevance for any European project is obvious: It is doubtful that occidental rationalism will survive all future barbarian onrushes, whether from inside or outside.

The project meets fully the objectives of the Marie Curie activity. It is multidisciplinary in its approach and founded upon international cooperation, and thus enhances the structure of the European Research Area.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
