Proteomics of plant responses to salt stress

Objective

This project will involve the examination of the effects of salt stress in two model plant species the glycophyte Arabidopsis thaliana and the halophyte Thellungiella halophilla.

During the first phase of the project, the physiology of these plants responses to salt stress will be examined, with particular focus on response of photosynthesis.

The aim of this work will be to identify the key regulatory processes that allow plants to avoid production of reactive oxygen species under salt stress and in particular how these differ between species.

A combination of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and time-resolved absorbance spectroscopy will be adopted to gain a complete picture of the physiological responses of the plants to salt stress.

In the second phase of the project a characterisation of the chloroplast proteome will be undertaken with a view to identifying novel proteins involved in responses to salt stress in the two species.

Finally work will be undertaken to identify key changes induced in response to salt stress in the two species using new techniques in isobaric labelling of peptides (iTraq).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
