Objetivo Conjugated polymers (CPs) are widely used as active materials in various electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes and solar cells. Fundamental aspects of the polymer in these devices are still far from being understood.Single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS) technique allows studying fluorescence on single-molecule level. Applying SMS to CPs is a state-of-the-art research topic, which has led to several new insights to these materials.Herein, we propose SMS study of some specially designed CPs to clarify several important scientific issues of fundamental photophysiscs and application of CP in organic electronics. Several kinds of poly(phenylene vinylene) derivatives will be synthesized by varying the side groups or by introducing different co-blocks .The designed CPs and related issues for SMS study are listed as follows:- Introducing groups of different electron affinity as side chains or co-blocks (to study the fluorescence quenching by charged species, and towards controlling the fluorescence intensity by external electric field);- Introducing energy trapping side groups (to state the effect of energy funnels);- Introducing chiral side groups or chiral co-blocks (to state the relationship between polymer conformation and fluorescence proper ties);- Introducing non-conjugated flexible (coil) co-blocks (to study the effects of conformation and aggregation on fluorescence). The research fellow has worked on synthesizing and studying CPs for many years. The host group led by Assistant Prof. Ivan Scheblykin is very active in SMS study of CPs. The combination of the expertise of the fellow in polymer chemistry and that of the host group in chemical physics of CPs and spectroscopy techniques is the key issue of the project success. The launch of the project will reinforce the fellow's abilities for further research career, and will promote the collaboration between the host group in Sweden and his past group in China.
