Multi-application advanced channel coding

Objective

This project is concerned with advanced channel coding techniques targeting multiple applications that will drive the future of communications. In particular, in the field of concatenated systems with iterative decoding (Turbo-coding), it will perform a few important steps that will deepen the comprehension of the iterative processing paradigm by developing a general theoretical framework for the analysis of concatenated systems.

The proposed research falls into the category of fundamental research but is strongly motivated by real-world applications: the project will provide suitable solutions for key applications, namely satellite communications and packet-wise communications (Internet, broadcasting), with a direct impact on every-day life. The project will be developed at the Electronics Department/PraCom at ENST-Bretagne under the supervision of Prof. Claude Berrou, one of the most prestigious researchers in the world in this field, and inventor of Turbo Codes. The project fits perfectly with the profile of the researcher and marks a natural progression in his career path.

The fellowship will allow the researcher to further develop his current theoretical research background and expand his research experience in a prestigious research centre to also include expertise in theories and methods of system level design and other layers of the communications chain. Acquiring expertise in linked research areas will be crucial for the maturity of the researcher and vital in shaping the applicants research career towards a long-term position.

The results arising from the project will make contributions to the basic science of iterative processing and information theory. Multiple publications and patents related to the new concepts explored and invented will be submitted/registered. Completion of the fellowship will contribute to EU scientific excellence, resulting in a completed piece of work dealing with a crucial research area.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
