Precision laser spectroscopy of the 1S-2S optical clock transition in atomic hydrogen

Objective

The applicant wishes to get expertise on doing one of the Worlds most precise measurements of laser-light frequency that is being stabilized on a spectrally very narrow transition in hydrogen atoms.
Precise values of Rydberg constant and Lamb shifts have been obtained from this experiment.
The measurement precision of 1S-2S optical transition has reached 14 digits allowing to set the upper limit for the possible drift of fundamental constants of Nature.
The applicant can contribute to the upgrade of the experiment with a new solid state laser system and novel laser stabilization part making the system more compact and one step closer to a practical H atomic clock.
The applicant will take part in a new precision measurement with improved precision. The experience at the MPQ will be very useful for advancing his scientific career

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
