Lagrangian stochastic modelling of turbulent two-phase flows

Objetivo

Polydispersed turbulent two-phase flows are flows in which bubbles, particles or droplets of different sizes are embedded. Accurate models and numerical simulations are useful for many industrial processes, particularly combustion devices, and also for environmental purposes.
Modelling and simulating these flows in practical configurations require to come up with a contracted statistical description, because of the huge number of degree of freedoms.
It is proposed to use present Lagrangian stochastic (or probability density function PDF) methods as the statistical modelling framework. Indeed, these models have been shown to be a powerful tool for simulating complex flows. Moreover, since these methods are based on a Langevin picture of instantaneous variables, which is used to simulate the entire PDF of the process, they still retain enough physics to be related/compared with results from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and from mesoscopic models based on the Boltzmann Equations.
The aim of this work is to use a one- and, possibly, two-particle PDF methods to link fundamental and engineering approaches to turbulence. First, the idea is to introduce newly understood mechanism or new pictures within the stochastic equations. Then, the development of a consistent two-particle PDF method is envisaged, where both particle and fluid phase is described in term of one-particle Langevin PDF approach.
It is expected that these advances will greatly improve the physics of present models. Finally, a novel methodology will be analysed. A hybrid Lattice-Boltzmann/PDF method will be studied. The proposal concerns the reintegration of a two-year Marie Curie fellow in his country of origin. Furthermore, the project proposes to continue and develop coherently his present research in collaboration with several groups of the highest quality engaged in fundamental and engineering research in turbulence. This collaboration opens promising perspectives for his career.
