Metabolic consequences of quorum sensing in bacteria

Objective

Europe¿s competitiveness in the field of antibacterial discovery programs is currently seriously compromised due to a serious drift of academic expertise on antibacterial discovery away from Europe to major USA Pharmaceutical companies where the multidisciplinary skills required for this work is available in single institutions. ERA is therefore at serious risk of becoming non-competitive with North America where there is critical mass and excellent training in this area.

To regain the European leadership i n this field there is an urge to generate a critical mass of scientific workforce with the required advanced multidisciplinary training. Quorum sensing (QS) is a key element in the control of bacterial virulence as it governs adaptive behaviour of microbes during colonization and infection, hence being a new target for the development of novel antimicrobial agents.

This project aims to identify the metabolic burden of QS in a key bacterial pathogen, which will lead to the identification novel ways to control QS and hence bacterial pathogenicity. This type of project cannot be achieved with the expertise of single institution but can be attained through establishment of this EIF fellowship for advance complementary multidisciplinary training where both the host institution and the visiting fellow will benefit from the exchange of expertise.

This project meets the objectives of the ERA and in particular the Marie Curie Host Fellowship for EIF as it will allow a top research scientist from the EU to undertake an advance research training program most suitable for his individual needs within a worldwide recognised centre of excellence in Quorum sensing research and metabolomics.

The topic has been freely chosen by the fellow in collaboration with the host institution with the aim to maximise his employability, competence diversification and life long learning as an independent researcher.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
