Non-linear analysis of dynamic interactions between brain areas

Objective

NABIDA will develop new methods to analyse the interactions between brain areas using functional neuroimaging data (event-related potentials [ERP] and functional magnetic resonance imaging data [fMRI]) to improve our understanding of communication within the brain. These new methodological approaches have great promise for stimulating development of diagnostic, rehabilitative and therapeutic measures for patients with brain dysfunctions, e.g. stroke.

Such dysfunctions can be reflected in a change of the dynamics of coordination and organization of the interactions between brain areas. The activation of brain areas can be quantified using imaging techniques like electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetoencephalo-graphy (MEG), and fMRI. NABIDA will solve some of the analytical challenges that stand in the way of making optimal analysis and interpretation of these data.

Specifically, NABIDA will develop new multivariate, time-variant, non-linear analysis methods to quantify dynamics of the interaction processes for both modalities and to find correlations between signal modalities from EEG (especially ERP) and fMRI. NABIDA will both develop these techniques and apply them to data collected under controlled experiments to evaluate their effectiveness.

NABIDA merges the biomedical engineering skills of the applicant with the international excellence of the host in biomedical engineering as well as signal and image processing, taking advantage of a strong interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary cooperation of research groups that integrates mathematicians, physicists, engineers, physicians and psychologists.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
