Objective
Digital holography is an inherently three-dimensional (3D) technique for the recording, analysis, and display of real-world objects, and is unrivalled in high-end industry for non-contact inspection of precision components. Many existing 3D imaging techniques are based on the explicit combination of several 2D perspectives (or light stripes, etc.). The advantage of holograms is that multiple 2D perspectives can be optically combined in parallel, and in a constant number of steps independent of the hologram size.
The advantage of a digital representation of holograms is that they can be processed, analysed, and transmitted electronically. As a generalisation of conventional images, digital holograms have greater potential for wider society than high-end industry. The applicant expects that scientific advances in digital holography could be made relevant to society if its promising capabilities could be harnessed for inexpensive mobile technologies.
The objectives of this research are:
(i) to adapt digital holog ram technology for mobile devices to admit applications that are useful to society, and
(ii) invent some of these applications.
The applicant has pioneered the basic research of processing (compression, encryption, noise removal) and analysis (3D occlusion extraction) of 3D real-world objects encoded in digital holograms. He will travel to the University of Oulu, Finland, to learn new skills of applied research and industry collaboration, gain expertise in the field of mobile and wireless technologies (in which Oulu is internationally renowned), and learn how to develop technology that can enrich people's lives.
