Objetivo
This project - called SURFACES - concerns the transfer of knowledge between an industrial engineering company and three Universities in three different member states of the EU. The knowledge transfer will occur through the secondment of 12 researchers between the partners to implement a number of research projects concerned with innovative coatings on advanced alloys. The products developed will have applications in areas such as the gas turbine industry, and also bone implant materials in the medical sector.
The project partners are:
(1) SIFCO Turbine is an engineering company based in Cork, Ireland. SIFCO manufactures and repairs components of aero-engines and industrial gas turbines.
(2) Cranfield University is a post-graduate research University based in the United Kingdom. Cranfield's School of Industrial and Manufacturing Science has an international reputation for research in gas turbine technologies.
(3) Universite La Rochelle (France). ULR's Laboratoire d'Etudes des Materiaux en Milieu Aggressives (LEMMA) has advanced expertise in chemical and electrochemical removal of coatings from metal alloys.
(4) The Trinity Centre for Bioengineering (TCBE) at Trinity College Dublin. TCBE has advanced expertise in the evaluation of graft materials, including the osseo-integration of bone implants.
The proposed research has strong inter-disciplinary dimensions and will involve interaction between engineering, materials and bio-medical technologies. Successful implementation of these projects will enhance SIFCO's competitive position in the global market for turbine component repair. The work will also enhance the research capability and the research reputations of the three University partners.
