Wireless sensors for environmental networks

Objective

Distributed sensing and computing, in association with dense wireless networks collecting and disseminating environmental data, is getting more and more ubiquitous, due to their enormous impact on issues like public health, social life, environment protection, etc. The Group at the Host Organization is currently investigating an original very efficient mixed acoustic/radio frequency localization algorithm, capable to localize multiple identical (i.e. without any identification code) sensor nodes.

A set of beacons emits a sequence of acoustic pulses in the space region containing the sensor nodes. When impinged by the acoustic wave front, each sensor node, independently from each other, sends a radio frequency (RF) acknowledge signal to a radio base. The radio base, knowing the positions of the acoustic beacons and the time of arrival of the acknowledge signals, computes the positions of the sensor nodes with a robust least square based algorithm, identifying and discarding possible false signals due to echoes and environmental noise. Computer simulation of noisy environments gave very good results with hundreds of sensor nodes within regions of few tenths of squared meters. The originality relies on the fact that the proposed algorithm is based on sensor nodes identical each other and equipped with a very simple hardware, at least in the localization section, enabling a very low-cost mass production.

The aim of this project is to design and realize a multi-purpose system-on-chip (SOC) capable to measure environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, etc., and to transmit the acquired data to a central unit for monitoring and post processing. The strategic objective of this project is also to foster the creation at the Host Organization of a research environment for next generation system-on-chips. To carry out this activity, the Host Group requires a transfer of know-how from mixed signals IC design experts.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
