Engineering of balance of plant for pressurised SOFC hybrid systems

Objetivo

Distributed energy systems are welcome in the urban districts of industrialized society as well as in rural areas where electricity is not provided or is delivered with non- satisfactory continuity. Moreover, distributed generation can lead to significant primary energy savings and carbon dioxide emission reduction. In the framework of distributed power generation, fuel cell microturbine hybrid systems based on SOFC technology are recognised as the most promising option for the clean and efficient power generation for the incoming years. The project participants are leading the technology development of SOFC and SOFC gas turbine hybrid system in Europe.

The overall aim of the project is to increase the professional and scientific figures of the researchers involved, with mutual benefit of the participant academic and industrial research organisations, fostering durable collaboration on real industrial problems: the project is part of a wider industrial strategy that will bring to the demonstration of the first European pressurised planar SOFC gas turbine hybrid system in 2008. Such a target, together with the fact that the industrial participant decided to develop independently (without outsourcing) all the balance of plant components, create an unprecedented opportunity for knowledge transfer between Industry and Academia. The proposed research is highly interdisciplinary, because it requires the synergy of a wide range of skills. Innovative transfer of knowledge methods will be employed in order to increase researchers' awareness of industrial and academic drivers, and to improve mutual communication.

The project will significantly contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable development, through joining environmental requirements with economic and educational needs. This project provides an opportunity for researchers to be involved in various fields of science and technology which are promising in the 21st century.
