Objective
This project conjoins expertise in competitiveness and innovation scholarship with new capabilities in technology-driven data gathering and analysis by taking a lead from the proprietary methological knowledge of a world- class US-based research centre. In particular, the project aims to develop the nominated host research centre's (The Centre for Innovation and Structural Change (CISC) at the National University of Ireland Galway, Ireland) capacity to examine the critical under-pinners and embedders of innovation in a European region. Essentially, this project will utilise the novel data mining technique of vTHREAD (Techno-Historical Regional Economic Analysis Database) as developed by University of Massachusetts (UMass) researchers led by Professor Michael Best.
This developed database and a set of complementary research tools designed to analyse regional industrial specialisation, growth, decline and reinvention are employed to populate a virtual laboratory of high-tech companies and then to 'interrogate' this population of companies and conduct experiments designed to shed light on the sources of industrial development and to enrich the concept of a regional innovation system. This project will thus generate and embed a research capacity to gather, analyse and disseminate very finely detailed innovation data in emergent and fast-changing high-technology clusters in the Border Midland and West (BMW) Region of Ireland (a less favoured region).
While the centrality of innovation to the Region's future socio-economic development is widely acknowledged and routinely emphasised in European, national and regional policy strategy statements, this policy priority is not currently matched by a research capacity in the region for data gathering and integration, or for rigorous interpretative exercises which could inform policy.
