Objective
Simulation is increasingly impacting on many stages of the aircraft development process. However, the exploitation of the Virtual Aircraft for certification has been limited. This is problematic for several reasons, including the development of highly optimised designs, novel configurations which have very little history to base certification on and the high cost of a lengthy test programme.
To exploit simulation for certification places a high demand on the methods. First, the complete system as to be represented and with a sufficiently high fidelity. Secondly, there has to be some way of rationalising differences with measurements and assessing the influence of uncertainty in system parameters. Thirdly, searches for problem areas must be done with high computational efficiency and with the minimum of previous knowledge.
The proposal is to establish an Excellence Team which considers the advancement of certification by analysis by considering aeroelastic stability certification as an example.
