Objectif
This proposal seeks a Marie Curie Chair for Professor Alexandros Eleftheriadis, a Greek who is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University in the U.S.A. The Chair will assist the University of Athens to bring him back to a permanent position. Prof. Eleftheriadis is an award-winning researcher of international reputation in the fields of multimedia signal processing and digital video, with a distinguished academic career in one of the best universities in the U.S. The proposed research is perfectly aligned with the goals of the Information Society Technologies thematic priority of FP6. In order to be able to create value on multimedia information and content, this proposal critically examines the state-of-the-art and articulates a novel unified solution that can address currently insurmountable problems in multimedia search, processing, and presentation. Building on Prof. Eleftheriadis's prior work, the proposal's objectives are to:
a) Develop a language-based framework for describing content structure for the purposes of description/indexing as well as presentation;
b) Address the theoretical problem of jointly optimal representations for indexing, authoring, and compression;
c) Develop a new run-time operating environment for multimedia systems;
d) Build software tools that will allow integration of such next-generation media data to both existing and new software applications, with minimal effort by the part of the programmer.
This requires a multi-disciplinary approach in which signal processing/information theory, multimedia searching, and software design are brought together. The research is coupled with a comprehensive plan for research training, involving graduate courses at local, national, and transnational scope, supervising and mentoring doctoral degree candidates, communicating research results to the European community, as well as communicating about research and research policy with the public-at-large.
