Minimally invasive neurostimulation device

Objectif

In response to the increasing societal need for better and more efficient healthcare, Philips, Europe's largest electronics company, is strategically positioning itself into healthcare technology. We are leading already in diagnostic equipment and we aim to extend our business activities into all domains of the healthcare cycle: diagnosis, cure, rehabilitation, and prevention. As part of this effort, Philips wants to offer innovative therapeutic technology to people suffering from brain diseases. The MIND Transfer of Knowledge project is centred on deep brain stimulation (DBS), a technique in which the delivery of mild electrical pulses from an implanted pacemaker to a probe with electrodes in the brain tissue is used to treat symptoms of a variety of brain diseases like Parkinson's, epilepsy, and depression. The MIND Transfer of Knowledge project will support the development of a highly miniaturised DBS device providing personalisable treatment.

Although the competences in the field of electronics and device technology needed to develop this technology are present in Philips Research, to fully reach our goals, we need to develop also new capabilities and knowledge in fields that traditionally are not covered by us like biomedical engineering, and medicine. We have already established a pan-European collaborative network of leading clinicians to deal with the medical aspects, but the biomedical engineering capabilities are still lacking in our efforts. The objective of MIND is to quickly establish at Philips Research this know-how that we miss for the research of innovative DBS technology. Three key research areas for knowledge transfer have been identified: neuro-electronic interface, targeted stimulation models, and DBS probe fabrication.
