Objective
Neurons in the brain have ornate dendrites that are the targets of thousands of synaptic inputs. In each neuron the many synaptic responses in dendrites are integrated to produce a single output from the axon. Although we have increasingly detailed knowl edge of the physiological and molecular properties of dendrites, we understand little of how dendritic integration of neuronal activity influences behaviour.
This issue is particularly important as the complex electrical properties of dendrites may greatl y expand the repertoire of computations that the brain can perform and as many common brain disorders are increasingly recognized to involve deficits in the integration of neuronal activity. The proposed research team will develop new tools to test the hy pothesis that different components of dendritic integration by pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus play distinct roles in forms of spatial memory that require the hippocampus.
The research team will develop a tool box of viral vectors to manipulate ion channels found in dendrites and will use electrophysiological and behavioural techniques to explore the functional consequences of these manipulations. In doing so the research team will attempt to establish the principles through which integration of neuronal activity in the dendrites of cortical neurons contributes to learning and memory

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
