Software for wireless sensor Networks

Objetivo

The recent integration of wireless network technologies, low-power processing units and sensor technologies has enabled the development of wireless sensor networks: one of the most promising technologies in the area of information and communications technologies. Most commercial platforms provide the hardware and software to easily configure and manage such wireless networks. However, in order to fully exploit the great potential of these systems, there is an increasing need of developing the middleware to enable the rapid and effective deployment of integrated information systems capable of fully exploiting the data being captured by the wireless sensor networks. Based on our past experience on wireless technologies, our research group is nowadays focusing its efforts on the study and development of integrated information systems using wireless sensor networks. We are particularly interested on the deployment of real-world wireless sensor networks and on the development of fully integrated information systems. In order to be able to effectively deploy a wireless sensor network and further develop a fully integrated information system, it is essential to count with the expertise of specialists on the design and development of embedded systems software and middleware. Our research team already counts with specialists in the areas of wireless communication networks and computer architectures. Furthermore, we are initiating a project in collaboration with the School of Agricultural Studies to deploy a wireless sensor network to monitor the environmental conditions of a vineyard. We have chosen this application due to its high relevance to our region, one of the largest wine grower regions in Europe. Our research team will gain an invaluable experience on the des ign and development of a fully integrated system making use of a state-of-the art technology.
