Global Platform on EMERGING RISK in the Food and Feed chain

Objective

Strategic objectives 1.To create a sustainable global platform for sharing results, stimulating dissemination and setting the research agenda on emerging food safety risks. 2.To develop a global implementation and harmonisation strategy for evaluation of research and related activities. 3.To identify shortcomings in current food safety systems regarding the identification of emerging risks. 4.To develop a strategic research agenda, and initiate joint research activities. 5.To stimulate global exchange of information and dissemination of emerging food safety issues. Abstract Emerging food safety risks are internationally recognised by governments as a major concern in all food production systems. Substantial resources have been invested in national and regional initiatives (e.g. research, regulation) to improve food safety standards, with the aim of identifying emerging food safety risks and facilitate pro-active intervention (e.g. RASFF, INFOSAN-WHO). However, there is no system in place to support the global coordinated exchange of information. Information about relevant research findings and risk management activities is fragmented, and not internationally disseminated. The novelty and value of GO-GLOBAL is that a global network of researchers and research and programming bodies will be established. Tried and tested methods will be used to identify problems and gaps in knowledge, resulting in generation of outputs invaluable to research managers and interested stakeholders globally. The establishment of a permanent structure will contribute to the development of trust between key players and institutions, needed to create an international forum for exchange of information and opinions on matters pertaining to emerging risk in the food and feed chain. The outputs will facilitate the creation of a global early warning system, and thereby will contribute to international confidence in food safety, consumer protection and international trade.
