Objective
Adult mortality rates in Russia are among the highest in the industrialised world. Lifestyle factors, in particular high levels of alcohol and tobacco consumption, have been implicated in the poor health status of Russian adults, although evidence is mainly from indirect sources, and individual level data linking the lifestyle of Russian adults to disease outcome are lacking.
Direct information is required to:
(i) provide firm evidence on the role of these factors in causing the high mortality levels, e specially in middle age, and
(ii) enable implementation of policy proposals to reduce the causes of high mortality.
This project will focus on providing individual level data on the causes of high mortality and morbidity in Russian adults and on disseminating results in a format that will allow them to be incorporated into policy development. In particular, it will utilise a large cohort of 100,000 Russian adults who have been recruited in three Russian centres. Initial follow-up will identify 5000 deaths including approximately 1000 deaths from ischaemic heart disease, 1000 due to external causes, 700 strokes, 250 lung cancers, 200 stomach cancers and 600 other cancers. Cohort analysis will be conducted on questionnaire information and measurements taken at the time of interview for all-cause and cause-specific mortality.
This will provide valuable evidence of the proportion of Russian mortality attributable to lifestyle habits such as alcohol and tobacco, as well as to obesity, adiposity and particularly, hypertension.
