Priorities and strategies to support cultural heritage research activities within ECTP and future FP7 activities

Final Report Summary - CHRAF (Priorities and strategies to support Cultural Heritage Research Activities within ECTP and future FP7 activities)

The Focus Area of Cultural Heritage (FACH), within the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) was launched in October 2004 with the aim of establishing a vision for 2030, a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) and an Action Plan for developing and integrating it into the ECTP and to provide inputs to the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and future European research programmes. The challenge of FACH is to promote the research in new sustainable and preventive strategies, concepts, methodologies and techniques for conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage in order to improve the quality of life of citizens and the attractiveness of Europe.

Project objectives

The CHRAF project aims to support cultural heritage research activities through a series of different coordination strategies. The main objectives include:
(i) the promotion and stimulation of information exchange in relation to cultural heritage research activities;
(ii) the identification of priorities and development of strategies as inputs to ECTP and its SRA;
(iii) the support of the organisation and coordination of the Focus Area of Cultural Heritage (FACH), with respect to other FACH related focus areas;
(iv) the promotion of the dissemination, transfer, exploitation, assessment and/or board take-up of past and present programme results, emphasising public participation with stakeholders, SME's and end-users;
(v) the contribution to strategic objectives, notably regarding the European Research Area (ERA);
(vi) the preparation of future community RTD activities and strategies for inclusion and consultation of stakeholders and SME's.

Methodology

The project was developed in four main lines: the first line was related to the cultural heritage research priorities and strategies for the integration in ECTP and FP7. In the second line, the organisation and coordination of FACH and its working groups in relation to the other ECTP focus areas and advisory groups was performed. In the third line, the exchange of information and dissemination of results of the projects related to cultural heritage research of the Fifth and Sixth Framework Programme (FP5 and FP6) were the main activities. Finally, in the fourth work line, the awareness, dissemination and exploitation issues of the FACH were developed.

Results

The main project results include three versions of SRA together with its implementation plans. The FACH secretariat was settled and a project website and a leaflet designed. An analysis on the impact of the Fifth and Sixth Framework Programme on cultural heritage related projects was performed and some recommendations on future activities given. A leaflet for SME's was also designed and distributed within the SME members of ECTP. Project exploitation and dissemination plans were defined. The coordination activities with other focus areas, European Technology Platforms and other forum were performed. Finally, the participation and the preparation of dissemination activities such as the 8th European Commission Conference on Cultural Heritage in Ljubljana on 10-12 November 2008 must be mentioned.
