Sustainable farm animal breeding and reproduction technology platform

Objective

The goal of this SSA is to support further development of Technology Platform on Sustainable Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction (FABRE TP). With a wide range of stakeholders a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) will be developed based upon Vision Paper "Sustainable Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction - A Vision for 2025". Stakeholders include breeding organisations, farmers and processing/food industry, research community, public authorities, regulators, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), politicians and (national) funding bodies. The SRA remit encompasses all farm animals with a professional interest in breeding, e.g. ruminants, equine, pigs, poultry, aquaculture, companion animals. FABRE TP will take into account safe and healthy food; robust, adapted, healthy animals; balanced breeding; biodiversity, animal welfare and integrity, environment, international development of animal production, a competitive and distinctive Europe and non-food benefits (recreation, animal pharmaceutical biotechnology). The SRA will be based on 1)Science/technology analysis for short, mid and long-term, undertaken by 7 species and 6 technology/theme groups 2)Capturing the relevance, hurdles and enabling factors in horizontal issues, among others: Intellecual Property Rights (IPR), Legal and Regulatory aspects, Technology Transfer, Education and Training, Financial Resources, Ethics, Consumers Issues, Third Countries and Communication with Politics 3)Scenarios for future development of animal breeding, based on sustainability, and 4)Consultation of stakeholders from all EU member states on future opportunities and needs of Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction (identification of stakeholders in each member state, inventory of opportunities, needs and gaps in FABRE R&D, discussion of draft SRA in national stakeholder meetings). The Implementation Plan will be based on the SRA, and set out the future exploitation by the stakeholders of FABRE TP.
