Objective
ATLAS is one of the two major experiments presently under construction at the LHC accelerator of CERN. ATLAS is also a basic key project in the scientific program of CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics located in Geneva. Relevant topics for the project concern t-quark physics and search for new particles. Top quark is the heaviest of known fermions and its properties are important tests of the Standard Model. The LHC is an ideal place to study top physics since about 10 million events may be expected per year. Therefore a large sample of events is expected since the beginning of data taking and many new analyses become possible.
As a comparison, the existing t-quark samples from TEVATRON experiments consist of few thousand events. With the TEV ATRON data, the t-quark mass has been measured with 4 GeV error, whereas a 1 GeV error is expected at the LHC. But many new analyses are possible at the LHC: precise measurement of the cross-section, decay modes, and t-quark polarization. Discussions started in ATLAS around 2002 concerning computation requirements for the LHC experiment, with the conclusions that GRID technologies had to be adopted. The adopted hierarchy for GRID technologies at the LHC is: TIER0, TIER1, TIER2 and TIER3. A TIER3 is a computing centre with data analysis as mail goal. The research project proposed here implies the participation of the applicant in the ATLAS project, and specifically in TIER3. Joining IFIC-Valencia groups, which is already involved in the project, would allow me to immediately attack the installation of ATLAS software in the TIER3.
Initially, I would participate actively in the regular maintenance of it and training for all physicists in the use of this software. Finally, the natural development of the project leads to the analysis phase, where I intend to play a major role. The main research line would be the study of resonance decays into t-anti t pairs.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
