Visual and acoustical impact of wind farms on residents

Objective

The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the perception of a wind farm by residents living nearby such a farm. A survey will be held among residents living within an approximately 2 km radius of modern wind farms in the Netherlands.

The wind farms will be taken from a list of all Dutch wind farms with modern > 500 kW) wind turbines. All residential addresses in postal code areas satisfying the distance criterion will receive a survey questionnaire. Non-respondents will receive a reminder.

The questionnaire will be similar to the one used in a recent Swedish study and have three parts:
- standard questions on socio-economic status and health;
- questions on the local living environment, including (sensitivity to) potential environmental nuisances;
- questions on the perceived impact of wind turbines.

For each address the distance to, the angular size of the nearest wind turbine and the maximum sound emission level due to the wind farm will be determined. The analysis of the survey result s will yield information on the impact of a wind farm on local residents, with an emphasis on visual and noise impact and the possible interaction between both.

The result will help in understanding to what degree a wind farm affects residents and what characteristics determine the impact. Also, the results will help in determining what mitigation measures may be effective in reducing local impact.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
