Astronomy fair in Lithuania

Objective

The results of the recent Euro-barometer 'Europeans, science and technology', conducted by the EC and published in June 2005 revealed, that only 11% of the Lithuanian citizens showed high interest in new scientific discoveries and even 42% are not interested at all. This is the lowest rate of interest among all 25 EU countries. However, 60% consider that they are poorly informed on this topic.

It is evident, that the Lithuanian scientists are not enough active when emphasizing their societal impact and that there is a gap between science and society on the whole. The initiative of the EC to organize the European "Researchers' night" on September 22, 2006 is a good opportunity for the Lithuanian researchers to start filling this gap. The proposed project "Astronomy Fair in Lithuania", arranged by three astronomical institutions is one of the steps towards this goal. Astronomy is the branch of science, attractive to many people.
