Radiation dose associated with computerized Tomography in patients with Crohn's disease

Objetivo

The annual number of CT examinations in USA has increased from 3.6 million in 1980 to 33 million in 1998. While CT accounts for only 11% of x-ray-based examinations, it delivers over two-thirds of total radiation dose associated with medical imaging.

Owing to burgeoning application of CT, there is an emergent need for radiation dose reduction to avoid reversal of risk-benefit ratio associated with this imaging modality. This project will address the issue of increasing utilization of CT scanning in a young group of patients with Crohn's disease in Ireland.

The study
- will investigate the overall cumulative radiation doses in a large cohort of patients with Crohn's disease (~350 patients) during long-term management and will investigate the contribution of CT scanning versus other imaging techniques to overall patient radiation dose;
- A systematic review comparing the value of CT scanning versus MRI scanning (no radiation dose) in assessing disease activity and complications of Crohn's disease will be performed.

The applicant has performed extensive research in radiation dose optimization at CT scanning in USA and has established collaborations with internationally recognised experts in the field. This application for funding represents the first attempt to establish such a progamme in Ireland.
