Gas Hydrate Formation in Relation to Seabed Seepage in the Mediterranean Sea: Examining Areas of Interest

Objetivo

Gas hydrates are ice-like compounds that form in deep-marine sediments as part of shallow systems of fluid flow, concentrating greenhouse gases (mainly methane) within frozen reservoirs. The gas hydrate system in the Mediterranean Sea was addressed by the HYDRAMED project (2004-2006), a Marie Curie EIF in Italy (at OGS, Trieste), through a combination of modelling of hydrate stability and observation of regional datasets, with the objective of establishing a regional framework for more detailed initiatives. The project identified several areas of interest, where hydrate formation is favoured by the flow of gas-rich fluids to seabed. In addition, successful ship-time applications have resulted in acquisition campaigns in two such areas, the Calabrian Arc (summer 2005) and the Nile Fan (planned for 2006 or 2007), both in collaboration with the EC Integrated Project HERMES at OGS (2005-2009). The intention of HYDRAMED-HOTSPOTS is to build on these achievements through detailed studies of the relation of seabed seepage to possible hydrate formation at sites of interest.
Complementary objectives are: i) to seismically image seepage structures using newly-acquired 2D & 3D seismic data from the two sites above, and ii) to model shallow fluid flow through seepage structures. The host institution in Germany (IUB) is a participant in both the HYDRAMED and the HERMES projects. The project seeks synergy with ongoing activities in the context of HERMES, with the long-term goal of establishing the basis for an international drilling proposal. The overall intention is to place the researcher as transnational mobility period in Italy within a larger professional project, one that will strengthen the links between IUB and OGS established during the HERMES-HYDRAMED acquisition campaigns and is complementary to the ongoing interests of EC-HERMES. The proposal is consistent with the overall objectives of the European Research Area as well as those of the Euro-Mediterranean partners...
