Reflections on historical culture have not been de-nationalized by comparative approaches to the same extent, as has research on nationalism. Partly, this is due to the fact that Cultural Heritage as a field is one of the complex responses to contemporary challenges attempting at producing and remoulding collective identity with a new frenzy from the 1990s onwards. Furthermore, the competence for analysing public museum culture is multidisciplinary. Therefore, the need and benefit for transnational, transdisciplinary action to connect research and knowledge is extraordinary and of vital concern. By bringing this field together with a sharp and comparative focus on national museums the program will form a new departure for understanding and working with the European diversity in this central institution.
The purpose is to develop the tools, concepts and organisational resources necessary for training researchers, investigating and comparing the major public structure of National Museums, responding to challenges of globalisation, European integration, and new media. What are the forces and values of traditional national display in dealing with challenges to national, cultural and political discourse? This will be achieved by a series of conferences providing a venue for younger scholars and eminent researchers from Europe to gather and develop the multi-disciplinary competence necessary to understand and compare the dynamics of national museums in a framework for broader historical culture and identity politics.
The series of events will:
a) provide a cross-national and cross disciplinary platform for research training at thematically organised conferences.
b) stimulate, develop and organise knowledge on the dynamics of national museums to make a reflexive partnership with the general public sphere and the museum institutions.
c) bring a new dimension to a thoroughly nationalised discourse of national museum by putting them in a comparative European context.
