Organizational and communal determinants of technopark performance

Objective

We propose a project to facilitate the re-integration of Ozgecan Kocak (Derinkok) into the European Research Area as a researcher and teacher. Dr. Kocak is leaving her position as a full time tenure-track faculty member at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business in New York, USA, to join Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Continuing to do innovative research and keeping in touch with her existing research community while developing new relationships within ERA will be crucial to her re-integration into Turkey. Dr.Kocak's expertise is in organizational studies. This grant will help her build an original data set on European organizations that she can use to conduct research together with students and other collaborators.

Specifically, she will build a data set on European technoparks and their tenant firms that enables her to carry out two research projects that examine:
- the determinants of community development among tenants of technoparks;and
- determinants of technopark success.

The results of these projects will be disseminated through academic papers that target the audiences of leading international journals on organization studies and entrepreneurship. Research reports will also be shared with interested national and local governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations that support regional development, and boards of interested technoparks.

The grant will also help her organize a series of research seminars on "Organization and Community Ecology in Regional Development" that feature prominent researchers from the United States, Europe, and Turkey, that will help her keep in touch with her existing research community and develop new research relationships in ERA while contributing to knowledge transfer from the USA. During the course of the project, Dr. Kocak will train one PhD student and offer courses that introduce the field of organization studies to undergraduates.
