Controlled thermonuclear fusion. Association Euratom/UKAEA

Objective

The main new experiment during the period will be the COMPASS device. Initially two physics objectives will be addressed, the control of disruptive instabilities and the operation of a circular tokamak at low q. The second phases of operation is likely to commence in 1991 with the installation of the D-shaped vaccum vessel which will allow the full optimisation of beta for long timescales with long pulse (several seconds) current drive tests.

Reversed Field Pinch Studies

Support for the joint RFX project at Padova will continue.

Theoretical and Computational Physics

History of Association/Laboratory

The Association dates from January 1st, 1973 when the UK joined the Community but co-operation between the UK Programme and European Programmes had existed for some time prior to the formal participation in Euratom activities. In the UK, work on plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear research was originally based at Harwell and Aldermaston. This work was transferred to the newly established Culham Laboratory in 1960-1963. During 1973-1976 Culham acted as host to the JET Design Team and since 1977 as host site for the JET Project.

Present Scientific and Technical Programme

The Programme is concentrated on the tokamak line and, in particular, support for JET and ITER, an experimental programme of tokamak development, fundamental theory and safety, environment and reactor assessments.

Staff Professionals : 117
Support staff : 18

Yearly budget (expenditure 1994): about 15.9 Mio ECU (without JET contribution)

Collaboration with other institutions

The UKAEA collaborates with numerous institutes: IPP-Garching, KFA-Jülich, Genral Atomics, San Diego; ORNL, USA; INPE, Brazil; NFR, Stockholm; Kurchatov Institute, Moscow; IOFFE Physico Technical Institute, St Petersburg; IFS, Austin, Texas; Princeton University and Moscow State University.
There is a collaboration with several UK universities: Imperial College, UMIST, Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews, Glasgow, Strathclyde and Nottingham. There are also links with Irish Universities.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
