STRING THEORY AND GRAVITATIONAL SINGULARITIES

Objective

Singular space times arise as solutions to Einstein equations of General Relativity. The singularities are associated to small distance scales, and they may be resolved in a quantum theory of gravity that modifies General Relativity at small scales. String theory is such a consistent theory of quantum gravity. We therefore expect to be able to learn more about gravitational singularities from string theory, and that is the goal of our project. A particular type of singularities in general relativity, orb fold singularities that arise from folding a space-time by discrete identifications, have been shown to be perfectly smooth in string theory. We intend to analyse with similar, and new techniques, like holography and the physics of non-preservative string theory states, more general space-time singularities. That will include the study of black hole and cosmological singularities in string theory. The project should advance the international field of string theory, it should tie in quantum field theory concepts with principles of general relativity, and it may lay bare more of the intricate properties of theories that try to unify the extremely well tested fundamental theories of nature, namely Quantum Field Theory and General Relativity.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
