Mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei by means of the time-of-flight technique at SPEG

Objective

The measurement of the masses of very neutron-rich nuclei is of great interest because it reflects many of the aspects of nuclear structure and offers a unique test of those components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that depend on isospin degree of freedom. In fact, novel theoretical predictions show that close to the neutron drip line magic numbers such as N=8,20,40 could disappear and new ones as N=6,16,34 arise. The present project proposes the detemination of the masses of a large number of neutron-rich nuclei located around the shell closures N=20, N= 28 and N=40 where very interesting effects seem to emerge.
The proposed measurement is based on the direct time-of-flight method that has been already successfully applied at the high-resolution spectrometer SPEG at GANIL. As a result the masses around 70 neutron-rich nuclei will be determined for the very first time and the resolution in the mass determination of more than 20 other nuclei will be improved.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
