Charm, a laboratory for QCD

Objective

Accurate measurements of specific charm particle decays are needed to provide calibration for lattice-QCD calculations. These inputs are crucial to extract electro weak parameters as the CP violation phase and light (u, d, s) quark masses. These are among the objectives of the CLEO-c experiment, which starts taking data by mid-2003. Several of these measurements can be conducted at b-factories using the large, already registered, statistics of charm quark pairs produced in the continuum. The applicant will be a member of a group of French and German physicists who are already involved in the Barbary collaboration. She will contribute to general-purpose activities in the collaboration and in the development of tagging tools to select D°, D+, Ds and charm-baryon samples. Physics analyses will be centred on the study of semileptonic decays of these particles and on lepton decays of the D+ and Ds mesons.
