Imaging temperature distributions using ultrasonic tomography for hyperthermic cancer therapies

Objectif

Hyperthermic cancer therapies such as laser induced thermal therapy (LITT) and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) are emerging methods of minimally-invasive and non-invasive tumour treatment that have been restricted in their clinical application due to a lack of adequate non-invasive temperature monitoring.

Current temperature feedback is based on measurements with thermocouples, which interfere with the propagation of heat and HIFU in tissue. The proposed project will investigate the use of through-transmission ultrasonic diagnostic techniques based on tomographic reconstruction for in-situ non-invasive temperature imaging. This novel approach should improve the accuracy of temperature reconstruction and also allow imaging behind highly scattering features or thermal therapy instruments.

The problem can be formulated as an integral equation. In this equation the scattered acoustic wavefield is expressed as a convolution of a known Greens tensor function and an unknown contrast given by the temperature dependent medium parameters. Images of the temperature distribution in the tissue are obtained by solving the integral equation using an iterative procedure.
