Objective
In this proposal we present a project in Algebraic Geometry with connections to TheoreticalPhysics. The applicant, Alessandro Chiodo, is an Italian researcher completing (June 2003) his Ph.D.at DPMMS, University of Cambridge, UK. The host institution is the Laboratoire Dieudonné(University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis), the largest research group in complex algebraic geometry in France. The main objective is to contribute to a set of conjectures by Edward Witten relating moduli of curves with integrable hierarchies relevant to String Theory and Quantum Field Theory. The method aims to achieve further results on the conjectures by lifting them from Chow rings toK-rings. The method is likely to succeed because the approach in K-theory contributed to the conjecture already in the applicant's Ph.D. Thesis. Several new techniques related to K-theory are involved and research training in these fields plays a key role for the success of the project. Research training is also beneficial to the applicant's planned career. The complementary skills (stacks, DG-schemes etc.) involved here are modern tools in Algebraic Geometry, rarely taught in European universities. Therefore this Marie-Curie fellowship will strongly enhance the applicant's possibilities to become an independent scientist with a permanent job in an Italian or other European university.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
