A support measure to boost the business prospects of GMES and telecom satellites through focused and innovative RTD work involving SMEs (NAVOBS)

Objective

This support action aims at enhancing the participation of Sees to the RTD programme of Thematic Area 4 related to the GMES and Space Telecom satellites. Being close to potential end-users needs, Sees are able to develop innovative services based on space infrastructures, which will complement and reinforce today's space business prospects. A consortium of 19 organisations, led by WSL, the Walloon Space Incubator, proposes to rely on ESINET, the European Network of Space Incubators, in order to give the opportunity to Sees all over Europe:
- To assess RTD efforts needed for the development, at a European scale, of innovative services using satellite generated data or transmission
- To link with RTD or business partners in order to develop such services /technologies in full coherence with the GMES/satellite telecom RTD
- To involve the use of EC funds within Integrated Projects or dedicated Straps in order to secure the means needed for a successful development work
- To propose exploitation plans for the future resulting RTD outputs

To achieve such objectives, the NAVOBS consortium will implement four concurrent processes:
- The assessment of Sees RDT needs for the development, at a European scale, of new and innovative services using satellite generated data or transmission
- The detection of RDT projects already being prepared by large industrial organisations in line with the EC Priority 4
- A selection procedure which involves interactions between all the incubators, the consulting partners and an Advisory Group. This selection procedure will pay attention both with the Integrated projects being prepared and with the Sees capabilities with the view to find the appropriate financing mechanisms to validate, to develop and to exploit the knowledge gained with EC support
- A proposal writing process involving SMES where about 10 RDT proposals will be presented to Integrated Project consortia and some Straps proposals to the EC.'
