Final Activity Report Summary - FLASH (understanding fast light-actuated structural changes)

Within the "FLASH" network work has been carried out aimed at imaging atomic motion in materials. A deeper understanding of photo-induced processes has been achieved.

This includes:
- Conformational changes in retinal protein
- Non thermal disordering of semi-conductors
- Coherent optical phonons in Bi
- Studies of potential energy surfaces
- Pressure-induced phase-transitions
- Chemical reactions in solution (Dissociation of diodomethane)
- These processes have also been studied by time-resolved density functional theory and optical spectroscopy to connect with previous studies and to deepen the understanding

The cross disciplinary work has involved researchers in traditionally diverse disciplines such as physics, biochemistry and chemistry.
