Objective
The aim of the present proposal is to initiate an integrated European training activity in the field of MolecularSimulations. The beneficiaries of the proposed activities will be postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. However our aim is also to keep mo re senior researchers abreast with the rapid developments in this field. Our objective is to go beyond "how to " training. Rather, those who participate in the training should gather adeep understanding of the tools needed to perform atomistic computer simu lations of Condensed Matter, Softand Bio-materials. The dissemination of such skills will be essential to maintain Europe's strong position inComputational Materials Science, afield that is of key importance in modern Materials Science. The project is based on a joint programme centered around four groups that are internationally leading in thisfield of research and that have an excellent international reputation for schools, workshops and tutorials; To achieve our objectives, we propose to organize:two yearl y schools, one in Amsterdam and one in London, for a general introduction to the field. Thecourses will provide intensive training during ten days, with the support of lecture notes and hands-oncomputer exercises. Lectures will be given by the authors of t he most important textbooks, and by otherleading researchers.a yearly series of tutorials introducing participants to the physical principles as well as the technicalitiesof widely used computer codes. They will take place at CECAM. The subjects range from QuantumMonte Carlo and Ab-initio Molecular Dynamics to Mesoscopic Fluid Modelling.a large conference in 2005 taking place in Erice - to be organized by Kurt Binder and Giovanni decotti- that will aim at a complete review of the field. Similar major "asses sment" meetings have beenorganized in the past with a period often years. This project will keep Europe in a leading position in modern #'
